You could use weathering to hide the imperfection. Use the same colors, but in slightly lighter & darker tones on the hull of the ship, dry-brush vertically. Back and forward on the deck.
use masking tape and multiple light layers of paint. That way, you will get sharp edges and an even look in the paint. If you used acrylic paint, you can use a cuetip + some water to fix the edges. Just moved from the Beginner’s category as my builds appear to need some modifications. Shown are my kits so far, from which the best looking one will enter the competition.
Thanks for your comments! Ships are only tricky in that the parts are sometimes very small. But this just adds to their “charm” after its all built and done.
Almost a month has gone by and I still can’t decide what to enter the competition with. Here are 2 more kits being considered (in addition to the Tirpitz and Yubari being considered earlier)…..
Out of the 4 you listed, I’d go with either the Hiei or Tirpitz. I’d paint them original schemes and maybe move up to intermediate. Not sure why beginner class = hand painting. IMO, beginners = original paint scheme + no modifications.

Updates so far….built up with just the main structures. Will take it all apart later to add details, putty, and paint. Fingers in a bit of pain from all the parts trimming.
